Following Jesus (Not the Disciples): Devotional
Author: Pastor Mat Tolentino • Date: 2026-05-17 • 5 min read
The apostle Paul rebuked the Corinthian believers for forming carnal factions around human leaders ('I follow Paul, I follow Apollos'). In our Christian walk, human mentors inspire us, but Christ alone is our standard.
1. Peter's Water-Walking Lesson: Peter walked on water as long as his gaze was fixed on Jesus. The moment he looked at the waves—and the other hesitant disciples remaining in the boat—he sank. Following Jesus requires looking past human hesitation.
2. Life Application: Stop comparing your spiritual progress to fellow church members or relying solely on human leaders. Measure your growth by Christ's love, humility, and obedience.
Understanding the Message
Why is it dangerous to focus on human church leaders?
Because all human leaders are imperfect. Elevating leaders above Christ leads to disillusionment when leaders stumble.
How do I fix my eyes on Jesus daily?
Through daily scripture meditation, prayerful reflection on Christ's character, and obeying His Word above human opinion.
