"For when one says, 'I follow Paul,' and another, 'I follow Apollos,' are you not mere human beings?" — 1 Corinthians 3:1-4

Introduction:

The church in Corinth suffered from spiritual carnality because believers divided into factions based on human leaders. We often fall into the trap of assuming spiritual growth means aiming to imitate human mentors or church leaders. But human leaders are pointers, not destinations. We must look directly to Jesus—the exact representation of the Father.

Point 1: The Standard is Christ, Not Human Leaders

"...until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ." — Ephesians 4:13 & 1 Corinthians 3:3

When we elevate pastors or disciples above Jesus, we limit our spiritual capacity to human flaws. God created us in His image to operate in Kingdom fullness as Christ did.

Practical Application & Example: Evaluating your spiritual health by Christ's love and character rather than comparing yourself to fellow church members.

Point 2: Keep Your Eyes Fixed on the Master

"Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid..." — Matthew 14:28-31

Peter walked on water as long as his gaze was fixed on Jesus. The moment he looked at the waves—and the other disciples remaining in the boat—he sank. Following Jesus requires looking past human hesitation.

Practical Application & Example: Stepping out in faith to obey God even if those around you in church are hesitant or passive.

Conclusion:

Fix your gaze upon Jesus. Refuse to settle for carnal Christianity that measures growth by human standards.
