"Jesus replied, 'Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church (ekklesia).'" — Matthew 16:17-18
Introduction:
Preached as a special Guest Message by Pastor Mat Tolentino for the Harvest Festival and 16th Church Anniversary at Victory Churches of Asia in Malabing on August 2, 2026.
Many believers approach God through a transactional mindset: 'I give and serve so God is obligated to bless my harvest.' But pagan altars run on transaction—giving to appease a distant god. Jesus completely dismantled this formula in Matthew 6:33 by commanding us to seek first His Kingdom. Giving was never the price of harvest; giving is a citizen's active participation in a Kingdom they already belong to.
Point 1: Exposing the Pagan Transactional Pattern
"Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you." — Exodus 23:25
"Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." — Proverbs 3:9-10
Pagan altars treat God as a vendor and worship as currency—giving in order to buy protection or force a blessing. When believers convert, they often rename the transaction without removing it. God is not a vendor to be appeased, but a Heavenly King who has already invited us into His Kingdom.
Practical Application & Example:
Moving away from 'If I give 10%, God owes me financial success' toward 'I give because everything I have already belongs to the King.'
Point 2: Seeking the Kingdom: Priority, Not Bargaining
"So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things... But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." — Matthew 6:31-33
A King is a person; a Kingdom is a territory where the King owns and provides everything. You cannot bargain with a King for what is already His. When you position yourself as a citizen inside His Kingdom, provision is not earned—it is added automatically.
Practical Application & Example:
Focusing your daily decisions, career, and household on Kingdom priorities, trusting that God's faithful care covers all material needs.
Point 3: Restoring Humanity's Governing Function (Ekklesia)
"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church (ekklesia), and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." — Matthew 16:18
"God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature.'" — Genesis 1:28
The word Ekklesia in ancient Greece meant a governing assembly called to administer rule in a territory. Jesus did not build a passive prayer gathering; He restored humanity's original Genesis 1 mandate to govern and steward (oikonomos) territory on behalf of the King.
Practical Application & Example:
Seeing your local church not merely as a Sunday gathering, but as a governing body establishing righteousness, order, and blessing in your community.
Conclusion:
Harvest is not a reward for appeasing God—it is the natural yield of land rightly stewarded by an Ekklesia. Stop bargaining for blessing and step into your royal assignment as a Kingdom steward.
"Lord God, forgive us for viewing Your altar as a transaction. Shift our hearts from customers to Kingdom citizens. Teach us to govern as Your Ekklesia and steward our territory so that Your Kingdom harvest overflows in our families, church, and land. Amen."
